SEAT has unveiled its first SUV at a special event in Barcelona. Called the Ateca, a name derived from Spanish geography, namely the village of the same name which lies in the west of Zaragoza, right in the heart of SEAT’s homeland, the car is the first of four new models set to be launched by the brand over the next two years.
“Our first SUV marks the start of a new era for SEAT. The Ateca is a clear development of the Leon DNA and will drive forward the success of the range. SEAT is a brand on the move,” said company boss, Luca de Meo.
As previewed in the 20V20 concept car that was revealed at last year’s Geneva motor show, the Ateca’s exterior styling carries the typical SEAT design language, like the trapezoidal grille, the side blisters with their sharp creases and the triangular light signatures, which are typical of sister models such as the Leon.
Based on the VW Group’s MQB platform and measuring 4.36 metres in length, SEAT claims the Ateca will offer some of the best use of space in the segment, with a boot that holds 510 litres in its standard configuration, or, 485 litres in versions with all-wheel-drive.
At UK launch this September, the new Ateca will be made available in a number of variants. The choice of turbocharged TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines spans from 113 bhp to 187 bhp, with either front-wheel or all-wheel-drive, mated to manual or dual-clutch DSG transmissions.
Optional extras will include full-LED headlights as well as a range of assistance systems, including some of the very latest from the VW Group, such as Traffic Jam Assist and Emergency Assist, right through to a package of infotainment systems with eight-inch touchscreens and full link connectivity. There will be three trim levels, with the top-of-the-range being the Ateca XCELLENCE.
