Mercedes-Benz has officially confirmed it is establishing a new product line by the name of “AMG Sport”.
The latter will fill the gap between current Mercedes-Benz vehicles that come with an AMG styling package and the more full-on, dedicated AMG models such as the recently unveiled GT coupe.
AMG claims it is currently on target to achieve a new sales record of over 40,000 units globally this year. However, company bosses say opening up new customer groups and segments will raise the brand’s profile and boost AMG’s sales potential worldwide even further, with the goal being to more than double car sales in the next three years.
In terms of differentiation, the AMG Sport badged models will get uprated engine output, all-wheel drive as standard in selected markets and special chassis components and brake systems from the classic AMG models.
The first two AMG Sport models are set to be unveiled at the International Auto Show in Detroit in January next year. Further models will be added to the product line in due course.
