The new Mercedes-AMG GT3 race car has been revealed ahead of next week’s Geneva motor show.
The FIA GT3 racer is based on the Mercedes-AMG GT road car, which is being launched in just a few days’ time. Finished in matte grey paintwork, the GT3 racing model gets a widened body, large air intakes, diffuser and an enlarged rear aerofoil.
The vehicle structure of the GT3 retains the road-going model’s aluminium spaceframe, while the driver is protected by a carbon-fibre seat pan and an integral roll-over cage made from steel.
Weight-saving measures include the engine cover, doors, front wing, front and rear aprons, sidewalls, side skirts, diffuser, boot lid and rear aerofoil all being replaced with carbon-fibre elements.
Under the skin, power for the racing car comes from the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine taken from the 2010 SLS AMG GT3, which generates approximately 600 bhp. The engine is mated to a six-speed sequential transmission.
Following an intensive test phase, the new AMG racing car will be shipped to the first customer teams at the end of 2015.
