Lexus has unveiled its all-new RX SUV at the New York motor show. Completely redesigned, the latest fourth generation model features a new body with a longer wheelbase.
From a styling perspective, the car’s front end is dominated by Lexus’s signature spindle grille, which is finished with a chrome border. Accompanying the triple L-shaped LED headlamps are reshaped fog lights and flared wheel arches.
In side view, the roof line minimises drag and reduces front and rear lift, according to the designers. The blacked-out C-pillars are supposed to create a “floating roof” effect. New 20-inch aluminium wheels replace the current 19-inch rims.
There are new L-shaped lights at the rear too, which wrap around the sides of the vehicle. When illuminated, these create a glow that extends laterally from the body to the tailgate – said to be a Lexus first.
The interior cabin gets repositioned trim elements as well as a large head-up display, while the “information zone” features a 12.3-inch monitor, set apart from the driver’s main operation zone.
The shift lever has been moved from the front of the instrument panel to make it easier to use and give the driver more space. The longer wheelbase means more leg and knee-room for rear seat passengers.
Lexus says the new RX will be available with an upgraded, more powerful 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with a target output of 300 bhp, matched to a new eight-speed automatic transmission.
The full hybrid powertrain, meanwhile, will feature a revised, Atkinson cycle 3.5-litre V6 system output, including the electric motor, will also be around 300 bhp.
In order to improve handling, Lexus engineers have had to strengthen the entire chassis. The body structure has been made stronger, too, with extra stiffness that also contributes to a reduction in engine and road noise levels in the cabin.
The fully independent suspension features front MacPherson struts and a rear double wishbone set-up.
Standard active safety features include a pre-collision system, lane departure alert, and automatic high beam. Optional safety add-ons will include adaptive lighting, a panoramic view camera and a blind spot monitor.
The RX is the best-selling model in Lexus’s 26-year history. With more than 2.1 million reaching the road, it represents three out of every 10 vehicles the company has sold.
Details and specifications of the production model for the UK and Europe will be announced later this year.
