Bentley has today unveiled the all-new Flying Spur, describing it as “the world’s most advanced luxury Grand Touring sports sedan”.
Styled in unison with the new Continental GT (and its convertible variant), under the watch of now Mulliner design boss Stefan Sielaff, the third generation model features the marque’s latest generation cut-crystal effect LED matrix headlamps – now enhanced by chrome sleeves – and new wrap-around rear lamps with ‘B’ motifs.
Other notable exterior design elements include a gloss black radiator grille complete with vertical vanes and a bright chrome surround; new 22-inch wheels; and a newly-designed, electronically-operated ‘Flying B’ mascot that is not only fully retractable but also illuminated.
A 130 mm longer wheelbase also means the new Flying Spur grants more interior space than any of its predecessors.
Cabin details include Bentley’s new fluted leather seating and, in what is claimed to be an automotive world-first, three-dimensional diamond quilted leather door inserts (reportedly inspired by the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 concept car).
Additionally, a sweeping horizontal wood veneer flows across the dashboard and into the doors; when the engine start button is pressed, the veneer section in the middle of the dash rotates to reveal a choice of 12.3 inch digital touchscreen or analogue dials showing outside temperature, a compass and a chronometer.
There’s also a remote control touch screen for rear passengers as well as an optional panoramic glass sunroof that stretches the full-length of the roof.
Under the bonnet, the car is powered by Bentley’s 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12, mated to a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission. The engine is claimed to deliver 626 bhp and 664 lb-ft of torque, as well as a 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 207 mph. V8 and V6 plug-in hybrid variants are expected too in the near future.
To further improve driving dynamics, the latest Flying Spur not only gets active all-wheel drive but also electronic all-wheel steering – a first for a Bentley. It also uses three-chamber air springs that contain 60 per cent more air volume compared to the previous model.
Driver assistance systems, meanwhile, include, among others, Traffic Assist, City Assist and Blind Spot Warning – all of which come fitted as standard.
Bentley says customer deliveries of the new model will begin in early 2020.
