Mercedes-AMG has revealed its third-generation E 63 – in the shape of the E 63 4MATIC+ and E 63 S 4MATIC+.
The latter’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine generates 604 bhp and 626 lb-ft of torque, thereby making it the most powerful engine ever installed in an E-Class. Zero to 62 mph is achieved in a claimed 3.4 seconds.
Both models are fitted with a specially tuned AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT (Multi Clutch Technology) nine-speed automatic transmission. Both versions will also come with AMG’s Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system, which means torque distribution on the front and rear axles will be fully variable for the first time.
On the outside, AMG designers have tinkered with new E 63’s exterior styling, giving it a sportier look than the regular E-Class. Key changes include a new radiator grille and coupé-style inset bonnet. The front also grows 17 millimetres wider to accommodate the greater track width and the large 20-inch wheels.
“The new E 63 models represent the biggest step forward we’ve ever taken from one generation to the next,” says Mercedes-AMG boss, Tobias Moers.
The new car will make its global debut at next month’s Los Angeles motor show. In the UK, it will go on sale mid-January with the first cars expected to arrive from May 2017.
