Mercedes-Benz has today revealed its new AMG C 63 Coupe, which is expected to take on the likes of the BMW M4, Audi RS5 and Lexus RC-F.
The exterior design differs from the regular Mercedes-Benz model, albeit sharing the same doors, roof and boot lid. The twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine, together with the increased track width on the front and rear axles, has meant a redesigned front end and a model-specific rear assembly as well as new side walls. The flared wheel arches make the AMG Coupé 64 millimetres wider at the front and 66 millimetres wider at the rear.
Taking its inspiration from the S-Class Coupé, the completely redesigned rear end includes a diffuser insert, while the design of the laterally positioned, optical air outlet openings is claimed to improve rear air flow.
Performance-wise, the range-topping ‘S’ model accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds, making the the coupe version just a fraction faster than the saloon – owing to the wider tyres and shorter-legged rear-axle ratios. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.
Power is transmitted to the road via AMG’s seven-speed Speedshift MCT (MultiClutch Transmission) automatic gearbox. The chassis also gets a totally redesigned suspension. A four-link front suspension with radial, racing-style brake connections is used. Mercedes engineers say the rear axle, too, has been completely newly developed for the Coupé.
Additional chassis elements include 18-inch 10-spoke wheels fitted as standard on the C 63 Coupé, and 19-inch wheels with a 5-twin-spoke design for the S Coupé variant.
The new car will be making its world premiere at next month’s Frankfurt motor show. Market launch is expected to begin in March 2016.
