Citroën has revealed the new DS5 ahead of its global debut at next month’s Geneva motor show.
The DS flagship model introduces the brand’s stand-alone identity, gains a new front end and also features a new generation of BlueHDi diesel engines from the PSA Group.
The French carmaker is describing the car’s styling as “avant-garde”, with the front end serving as a design blueprint for all future DS models. Like the DS 3 and DS 3 Cabrio, the facelifted DS 5 features the brand’s new light signature, along with scrolling indicators.
On the inside, Citroën designers say they have taken their inspiration from the the world of aerospace design. The main controls are grouped on two centrally positioned consoles, one at a low level near the gear selector and one overhead. Both incorporate specially designed buttons, dials and toggle switches.
In contrast, a new infotainment system dubbed Touchdrive has allowed the designers to adopt a buttonless approach for the centre console. The set-up uses Mirror Link technology, which makes smartphone integration easier. Apple Carplay integration will also be added further down the line.
In terms of power, the DS5 will come with six Euro 6 engines and gearbox combinations, with torque of between 177 and 295 lb-ft. Citroën says the range will be extended at the end of 2015 with a new 207 bhp engine, the THP 210 S&S 6-speed manual.
The diesel range, meanwhile, features BlueHDi 120, 150 and 180 engines. Combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox, the BlueHDi 120 manages 118 bhp, 221 lb-ft and 100 g/km of CO2, while returning a fuel economy of 74.3 mpg.
A hybrid 4×4 model also combines a HDi diesel engine with an electric motor to deliver 197 bhp. CO2 emissions are claimed to be sub-100 g/km and fuel economy is said to be over 80 mpg on a combined cycle, rising to more than 90 mpg in the city.
Becoming the first model to be sold under the DS brand in the UK, the new DS5 will arrive in showrooms in July.
