The international Car Design Award jury has chosen Swedish carmaker Volvo as winner of the Brand Design Language Award 2016.
Originally established in 1984 by Auto & Design magazine and its founder Fulvio Cinti, the Car Design Awards have been newly revived following a nearly 20-year hiatus.
The awards are divided into three categories: two of them, “Concept Cars” and “Production Cars”, are historical and they are now joined by a third, namely, “Brand Design Language”.
“The new edition of the Car Design Award introduces this new accolade assigned to the design team that has worked best on the consistency and transversality of a brand’s formal language over the entire product range. Volvo Design is therefore the very first, well deserved winner of this prize,” said Silvia Baruffaldi, current editor of Auto&Design and president of the Car Design Award jury.
“When we started work on the XC90 we knew that we had an opportunity to take the Volvo Cars brand in a new direction,” added Volvo’s senior vice president of design Thomas Ingenlath.
The new XC90 SUV was followed more recently with the launch of the new S90 saloon and V90 estate.
Last month Volvo also unveiled two new concept cars – the Concept 40.1 SUV and Concept 40.1 hatchback – that move the Swedish brand in a new direction and mark the official launch of its global small-car strategy.
