UAE-Built Zarooq ‘Sand Racer’ Road Car Unveiled
Newly formed Arab automotive brand Zarooq has released renderings of a new off-road racer that will make its official world premiere at the 2015 Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix towards the end of next month.
The aggressively-styled exterior has been designed by Anthony Jannarelly – the same man responsible for designing the Lykan Hypersport supercar by Dubai-based W Motors.
“The Zarooq Sand Racer is the first car specifically designed for the UAE desert,” says Zarooq director and former French racing champion, Bruno Laffite. “The UAE are famous for amazing deserts, extreme safari motorsport and dune racing, but the performance of US and Japanese cars just wasn’t good enough. So we decided to assemble a team to design and build the car we have all dreamed about, specifically made to race in the desert,” adds fellow Zarooq director Mohammed Al Qadi, who previously served as senior director of operations at the famous Yas Marina Circuit.
Weighing 950kg, the Zarooq Sand Racer comes with a closed cockpit and air conditioning, while power is derived from a mid-mounted 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 492 bhp. Zarooq says the chassis has been developed in partnership with Campos Racing GP2, winners of the Formula E world championship.
The car will be manufactured in the UAE in partnership with Jannarelly & Juillot Special. First deliveries are expected in early 2016.
