Range Rover to Launch All-New ‘Velar’ SUV
Range Rover is adding an all-new fourth model to its product line-up, with the new car set to fill the gap between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.
Dubber “Velar”, the mid-sized SUV will aim to target the likes of the Porsche Macan and BMW X6 when it goes on sale later on this year.
The origin of the Velar name, meanwhile, dates back to the first Range Rover prototypes of the Sixties. When development engineers needed to hide the true identity of the 26 pre-production Range Rovers, they chose the name Velar, derived from the Latin velare meaning to veil or cover.
“We call the Velar the avant garde Range Rover. It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything,” says Land Rover design boss, Gerry McGovern.
The new car will be officially unveiled at the start of next month ahead of the Geneva motor show.
