Yamaha will introduce a newly styled YZF-R6 for 2017. With over 160,000 units sold in Europe – and having won the World Supersport Championship 3 times in the last 7 years – the YZF-R6 is on the record as being one of the most popular and extreme supersport bikes that Yamaha has ever built.
Targeting the supersport segment, the latest 600cc machine gets newly developed low-drag bodywork and a racing look that bears all the characteristics of Yamaha’s R-series DNA.
Inspired by the latest generation YZF-R1, key styling features include the M1-type central forced air intake and recessed LED twin headlights. Side ducts and a new YZF-R1 style tail reinforce the race-infused look.
Yamaha’s designers also claim the new front cowl and windscreen are the most aerodynamically efficient ever featured on this model. The low drag front fairing has been developed using some of the key elements from the YZF-R1, and the latest design therefore delivers an improvement of 8% in aerodynamic efficiency. The bike’s new LED flashers are also incorporated within the rear view mirrors to further reduce turbulence and drag.
Other design changes include a reshaped seat and rear subframe. Manufactured from die-cast magnesium, the subframe is 20 mm narrower at the front, allowing the rider to tuck in more closely to the 1.2 kg lighter aluminium fuel tank for improved aerodynamics. The 20 mm slimmer centre ‘waist’ section also gives improved ergonomics and easier leg reach to the ground.
But it’s not just the YZF-R1 inspired body that reinforces the bike’s links with the flagship supersport model, because the 2017 YZF-R6 also comes equipped with new KYB upside down forks from the YZF-R1; these feature large diameter 43 mm tubes – compared to 41 mm on the previous model. The front wheel axle is also increased in diameter to 25 mm for better handling. A newly designed adjustable KYB rear shock completes the suspension setup.
Additional chassis details include a YZF-R1 type radial front brake system with dual 320 mm discs combined with aluminium 4-pot opposed piston calipers.
Developed from the design featured on the YZF-R1, the new instrument display, meanwhile, features an analogue style tachometer and digital speedometer with a multi function display that includes TCS and ABS status.
Also new for 2017 is an “advanced” traction control system that is adjusted by a switch on the handlebars. Yamaha’s Chip Controlled Throttle and Chip Controlled Intake both come as standard.
The bike also gets a new quick shift system that is similar to the design used on the YZF-R1, and which is claimed to instantly cancel drive torque when an upshift is detected – enabling full throttle clutchless upshifts for improved acceleration through the close ratio 6-speed transmission.
