The Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion has received the “Red Dot: Best of the Best” award, and the “Concept IAA” the “Red Dot” award for “high quality of design”.
The ceremony took place in Singapore just last night at the annual “Red Dot Design Concept Award”.
Both concept cars provide a futuristic outlook on the further development of user interface and user experience design.
With the autonomously driving luxury saloon F 015 Luxury in Motion, which made its world premiere at the 2015 CES show in Las Vegas, Mercedes-Benz designers attempted to demonstrate how the car of the future will be transformed into a private place of retreat.
One key aspect of the research vehicle is the continuous exchange of information between vehicle, passengers and the outside world. Six displays are installed all around the interior for this purpose. Through gestures, eye-tracking and touching the high-resolution screens, the passengers can interact with the networked vehicle.
On the outside, large LED areas at the front and rear plus a forward-pointing laser projection system are responsible for visual communication with the vehicle’s surroundings.
The Concept IAA, meanwhile, which debuted at last year’s Frankfurt motor show, features a shape-shifting exterior body with a Cd value of 0.19 – a world record according to Mercedes-Benz.
At the same time the vehicle study brings graphics and animations on a par with the quality of Hollywood films into the car for the first time.
The user experience design of both vehicles was developed at the German carmaker’s specialist R&D centre in Silicon Valley, where designers and engineers are focusing almost exclusively on the digitisation of the car.
