Ducati, Ferrari Pick Up Design Awards
Ducati’s 1199 Panigale superbike has been awarded Italy’s most prestigious and influential award for design – the Compasso d’Oro (Golden Compass).
Held at the former Ansaldo works in Milan this past week, the ceremony presented over 270 products entered for this 23rd edition of the triannual design award.
The 1199 Panigale was chosen “for having transferred competition level performance to an elegant mass-production model that is still consistent with the brand’s traditional image”.
As a result, the 1199 Panigale becomes the first ever motorcycle to receive the Golden Compass award and subsequently enters the Compasso d’Oro Collection.
Running for over 60 years, almost 300 projects have so far received the prize and these, in addition to more than 2000 others selected for “honourable mentions”, form the Historical Collection of the Compasso d’Oro awards.
The Collection, managed by the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (ADI), aims to represent and catalogue the best of Italian industrial design. It is described by the Cultural Heritage Department of Italy as being of “exceptional artistic and historical interest” and is subsequently included in their National Heritage collection.
Ferrari’s F12berlinetta, meanwhile, has also been awarded the Compasso d’Oro. Accepting the award on behalf of Ferrari in the Officine Ansaldo exhibition hall in Milan this week was Ferrari’s Senior Vice President of Design, Flavio Manzoni.
Designed by Ferrari’s Styling Centre in collaboration with Pininfarina, the front-engined V12 F12berlinetta is the most powerful, high-performance Ferrari road car ever built.
Founded in 1954, the Compasso d’Oro is said to be the world’s longest established design award. Developed from an idea by Gio Ponti, it was first organised by the Rinascente department store group with the aim of highlighting the value and quality of early Italian-designed products. In 1964, ADI became responsible for its organisation, supervising its impartiality and integrity.
