Car Design Contest: SAIC ‘Roewe-MG Cup’ Automotive Design Awards China
SAIC Motor, owner of MG, has announced details of the first “Roewe-MG Cup” design contest.
The scheduled design competition will run under the slogan “Design Drives Dreams” and is aimed squarely at Chinese university students. Adopting a theme of “Elegant Confidence”, would-be car designers are invited to submit design proposals for a future sedan, SUV or MPV for Roewe in the year 2020.
Announced officially by Shao Jingfeng, current Director at SAIC Design Center of China, the goal of the design awards is to identify and nurture future automotive design talent within China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan).
The declared submission deadline is 10 June. Specific winners will be awarded a one-week residency in SAIC’s UK Design Studio and a two-month internship in SAIC’s Shanghai Design Center.
Engineers and designers at SAIC Motor’s European Design Centre, located in the British city of Birmingham, work on cars within SAIC’s own brand portfolio of Roewe (China-only brand) and MG.
Sales of the two brands totalled 200,000 units in 2012, a 23 per cent increase over 2011. This was the biggest percentage growth within the SAIC group’s automotive divisions. During the last six years, an independent report has shown that brand awareness in China of Roewe has grown to 93.4 per cent and MG’s has increased to 84.4 per cent.
