Audi has revealed the 2017 A5 Sportback ahead of its global debut at the upcoming Paris motor show.
The body of the all-new second-generation model is claimed to be the lightest in its segment. A mix of materials makes it 15 kg lighter than that of its predecessor. The overall weight of the new version has fallen by as much as 85 kg to 1,470 kg, excluding the driver.
Externally, the designers say the wave-pattern shoulder line is more strongly accentuated than on the previous model. At the front, the ‘Singleframe’ grille is also significantly flatter and wider than on the outgoing model.
The new car grows on the inside as well. The interior length has gained 17 mm, the shoulder room for driver and front passenger up to 11 mm and the rear knee room 24 mm.
The load-area width, meanwhile, measures exactly one metre. The rectangular-shaped layout of the 480-litre luggage compartment can accommodate up to 1,300 litres with the rear seats folded down.
Underneath, the A5 Sportback gets two TFSI and three TDI engine units. They produce between 187 bhp and 282 bhp of power. Compared with the previous model, Audi engineers claim to have reduced fuel consumption by as much as 22 per cent while increasing power output by up to 17 per cent.
Chassis changes include the front axle getting a redesigned five-link suspension, while a five-link construction replaces the trapezoidal-link rear suspension used previously.
Sharing the stage at Paris will also be the flagship S5 Sportback, which draws upon a new V6 turbocharged TFSI powerplant to deliver 349 bhp and 369 lb-ft of torque from 1,370 to 4,500 rpm. From rest, it is claimed to reach 62 mph in 4.7 seconds and can reach a limited top speed of 155 mph. The engine is mated to an eight-speed tiptronic transmission.
Visually, many of the S-specific styling additions are painted in graduated tones of matt grey. Aluminium inlays accentuate the design inside, while the exterior mirror housings get an aluminium look. The rear bumper integrates a black honeycomb grille, aluminium diffuser trim and the signature four tailpipes. A spoiler lip in body colour marks the separating edge of the luggage compartment lid.
The all-new A5 Sportback range is expected to open for UK order in mid-October.
